Different Types of Full Dentures

Immediate, Standard, & Implant Dentures in Kanata

Depending on your unique needs, we can help you choose between the 3 main types of full dentures: immediate, standard, and implant-supported dentures.

  • Immediate Dentures – This type of full denture is intended for temporary used following teeth extractions to allow your gums to heal before getting your actual set of full dentures.
  • Standard Dentures – Otherwise known as conventional or complete dentures, standard dentures are meant to be worn permanently and are designed to look and feel just like your natural teeth.
  • Implant-Supported Dentures – A type of full denture which is held in place via dental implants. Dental implants are placed in the jawbone and held provide additional support and stability.

It really depends on the specific type of dentures, the materials used, and your oral hygiene habits. However, you should typically expect a set of dentures to last anywhere from 5-10 years – with a denture reline or rebase within that timeframe.

Dentures are universally regarded as the best solution for replacing your missing teeth. Despite the technological advancements in the denture industry, if you’ve never worn dentures before they will take some time to get used to.

You may experience some minor irritation, difficulties with speaking, and some challenges with eating, but after a few weeks of practice and getting accustomed to your dentures, you should feel comfortable confident with your new dentures.

Depending on whether or not you have removable dentures, it’s considered a good practice to remove your dentures at night to give your gum tissues an opportunity to rest. However, if you just received a set of immediate dentures, they should typically be left in for at least 24 hours after tooth removal surgery.

Just like you would with your natural teeth, your dentures need to be properly cared for and cleaned. When cleaning your dentures, make sure to avoid abrasive toothpastes and coarse bristle toothbrushes.

When removing your dentures overnight, brush your gums and remaining natural teeth thoroughly while having your dentures submerged in water. There are also specific denture cleaning products available – just make sure to consult with a denturist to ensure you’re getting the right products.

Custom made dentures are an ideal solution for replacing missing teeth and provide a wide range of benefits, including:

  • Improve speech
  • Enhance ability to chew food
  • Increase confidence in your smile
  • Support facial muscles
