Trusted Gum Grafting and Periodontal Care From Kanata's Experienced Periodontist

Receding gums are more than a cosmetic concern. When your gum tissue pulls back from your teeth, it exposes the sensitive root surface beneath — leaving your teeth vulnerable to decay, sensitivity, and eventually tooth loss. Gum grafting is a proven, minimally invasive procedure that stops gum recession in its tracks, protects your teeth from further damage, and restores a healthy, natural-looking gumline.

At Village Green Dental Care in Kanata, our periodontist brings specialist expertise to every gum grafting procedure. We know that being referred for gum grafting can feel daunting, and we take the time to walk you through exactly what to expect — answering every question and ensuring you feel informed, comfortable, and confident before we begin.

We are currently accepting new patients in Kanata and the surrounding Ottawa West area.

What is Gum Grafting

Gum grafting — also called a gingival graft or periodontal graft — is a surgical procedure that replaces lost or receded gum tissue around one or more teeth. A small amount of tissue, typically taken from the roof of your mouth or a donor source, is carefully attached to the area of recession. Over time, the grafted tissue integrates with your existing gum, creating a thicker, healthier gumline that protects the tooth root below.

The procedure is performed under local anesthetic, is well tolerated by most patients, and typically takes under two hours depending on the extent of treatment needed.

Signs You May Need Gum Grafting

Many patients are not aware of gum recession until a dentist identifies it at a routine exam. Signs to watch for include:
  • Teeth that look longer than they used to
  • Increased sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods and drinks
  • Visible exposure of the tooth root below the gumline
  • Tenderness, redness, or swelling along the gumline
  • A notch you can feel at the base of a tooth where it meets the gum
  • Being told by our dentist or periodontist that your gums are receding
If you have been referred for gum grafting, or if any of these symptoms sound familiar, contact Village Green Dental Care to book a consultation with our Kanata periodontist.

01.

Consultation and assessment

Our periodontist examines the extent of your recession, reviews your dental and medical history, and recommends the most suitable grafting technique. X-rays may be taken to assess bone levels. You will leave with a clear picture of the procedure, recovery, and costs involved.

02.

The day of surgery

A local anesthetic is administered to fully numb the treatment area. You will feel pressure during the procedure, but should not experience pain. Depending on the number of teeth being treated, the procedure typically takes between one and two hours.

03.

Suturing and dressing

Once the graft tissue is secured, our periodontist places sutures and may apply a protective dressing to the area. Detailed aftercare instructions are provided before you leave.

04.

Recovery

Most patients return to desk work and light daily activities within a day or two. Full healing of the graft site generally takes one to two weeks, with the grafted tissue fully integrating over the following weeks.

Benefits of Gum Grafting

Gum grafting does more than restore the appearance of your gumline. The procedure delivers meaningful, lasting benefits for your oral health:
  • Stops active gum recession and prevents it from progressing further
  • Protects exposed tooth roots from decay and sensitivity
  • Reduces or eliminates temperature and pressure sensitivity
  • Lowers the long-term risk of tooth loss associated with severe gum recession
  • Restores a natural, even gumline and improves the overall appearance of your smile
  • Supports better overall periodontal health following gum disease treatment
